Kim Eun-ji Makes History as Youngest 9th Dan Player in Korean Baduk

16-year-old Kim Eun-ji finally surpassed the Taesan border of Choi Jeong (27). Kim Eun-ji, 8th dan, won the title with 2 wins and 1 loss by defeating Choi Jeong in the final 3rd round of the 7th Haeseong Women’s Gisung Tournament held in Korea on the night of the 19th with a score of 100 in 250 moves. It was a victory of conversion that prevented Choi Jeong’s fierce counterattack at the last minute.

Kim Eun-ji, a new 9th dan player, rewrote Korean baduk history overnight.

With this win, Kim Eun-ji changed the history of domestic baduk. First of all, it is the record for the shortest period of time. As she was promoted to 9th dan, she achieved Iksin (入神) for the first time in 3 years and 11 months, shortening the previous record set by Han Woo-jin this year by a whopping 6 months. It is the shortest record for both men and women. He also changed the record for being the youngest person to receive a career. He reached 9th dan at 16 years and 6 months, 17 months earlier than Park Jeong-hwan (17 years, 11 months).

Choi Jeong has been called the Empress of Korean Baduk. She lost her first title to Kim Eun-ji, who is 11 years her junior.

Choi Jeong has reigned as the ‘Empress of Baduk’ by maintaining the top spot in the women’s rankings for 121 consecutive months. She holds both the Wu Qingyuan pear and Shen Ko pear, the world’s two largest individual women’s awards. She has won 29 titles, including winning all five women’s competitions held this year.

Kim Eun-ji has been receiving attention as a top prospect, but has not been able to overcome Choi Jeong’s barrier. The first time she defeated Choi Jeong was in the Women’s Baduk League last July, and in this Women’s Tournament, she poured in two wins like gold. Her record against Jeong Choi now stands at 3 wins and 13 losses. This is a feat for Kim Eun-ji, who competed for supremacy three times and lost all of them, making it her fourth out of three matches.

Kim Eun-ji won the trophy at this year’s Rookie Hero Tournament, Nanseolheonbae, and Hyorim Cup, but these were all competitions in which Choi Jeong did not participate. Kim Eun-ji’s domestic ranking in December was 71st, and if narrowed down to only female articles, she was 2nd after Choi Jeong.

After the winner was decided, Kim Eun-ji said, “I am really happy that I won the championship after defeating Master Choi Jeong. “I will work harder in the future,” he said. “I wanted to quickly become 9th dan, and I think good energy followed me.” The winning prize is 50 million won.
