Since the first outbreak of Covid-19 has been reported in the country, more than 50 people have died from the fever, according to official Pyongyang terminology, and more than a million have become ill.
Kim has “strongly criticized” health officials for their clumsy response to stopping the epidemic. In particular, it has not been possible for pharmacies to be open 24 hours a day and for medicines to be distributed.
The leader has ordered the army to step up measures to “immediately stabilize the supply of medicines in Pyongyang”, where an omicron strain of the Covid-19 virus was identified last week. This was the first time North Korea reported cases of Covid-19.
The process of proper distribution of drugs has failed, “because the cabinet and public health officials responsible for supplies have not rolled up their sleeves, have not properly acknowledged the current crisis,” the official news agency KCNA quoted Kim as saying.
The KCNA reported that a total of 50 people had died by May 15, 1,213,550 cases of “fever” had been reported, and more than half a million people were receiving medical care.
