Broadcaster Park Soo-hong’s wife Kim Da-ye (31)’s secret to losing weight after giving birth was revealed.
Park Soo-hong, who appeared on KBS2TV’s entertainment program ‘The Return of Superman’, which aired on the 6th, gave an update on his daughter Jeon Jeon-i (Taemyeong) from the day she gave birth, when he first met her. The VCR released on this day showed Park Soo-hong waiting anxiously on the day Jeon Jeon was born. Park Soo-hong, who was on the panel, said, “Usually it takes an hour to recover, but it took more than two hours.” He added, “My wife said it took a long time because she had trouble stopping the bleeding.” Next, when asked about Kim Da-ye’s current state of health, Park Soo-hong said, “She has really improved a lot,” and “As soon as she started breastfeeding, she suddenly lost a lot of weight.” Previously, Da-ye Kim posted a photo of her slimmer face along with the comment, “Jeonbok’s mom’s current status,” and “I lost 15 kg after giving birth, but I still have 20 kg left.” We looked into the health benefits of breastfeeding, including whether it actually helps with weight loss.
◇Breastfeeding, helps with maternal weight loss
Mothers can benefit from dieting by breastfeeding their babies. This is because breastfeeding consumes an average of 170 kcal per day to produce milk. Dr. Kim Cho-il’s team at the Korea Health Industry Development Institute announced that the difference in weight between the experiment participants when they started breastfeeding and before pregnancy was an average of 6.6 kg. As the duration of breastfeeding increased, the weight difference gradually decreased. After 11 months of breastfeeding, the weight difference had decreased to 1.6 kg. Even though there was no difference in the calories consumed by the mother, her weight decreased. Breastfeeding may shorten your waist circumference. According to a study by the University of Pittsburgh, women who breastfed for more than six months had a shorter waist circumference relative to their height for 10 years than women who did not breastfeed. The research team analyzed that feeding the baby breast milk for more than six months helps the mother reduce abdominal fat.
◇Babies, lower risk of developing asthma
Breastfeeding is good for your baby too. Lowers the risk of developing asthma. A research team at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center studied the relationship between the duration of breastfeeding and the likelihood of developing asthma in a total of 2,000 children. The results showed that babies who were breastfed for 5 to 6 months were 3% less likely to develop asthma than babies who were breastfed for 2 to 4 months. Babies who were breastfed for more than 6 months were 9% less likely to develop asthma than babies who were breastfed for 5 to 6 months. The research team said, “The period of breastfeeding combined with formula, juice, or other foods had no effect on lowering the likelihood of developing asthma,” and “Only the period of breastfeeding alone was associated with the likelihood of developing asthma.”
◇If it goes on for more than 6 months, it may be harmful.
However, breastfeeding for too long to reduce the mother’s diet and the baby’s chance of developing asthma is not good for the baby’s health. This is because it can cause iron deficiency anemia. Breast milk contains very little iron. If your baby lacks iron, he or she may feel dizzy or have delayed physical development. In particular, babies who have been exclusively breastfed for over 6 months or premature babies weighing less than 2.5 kg are vulnerable to iron deficiency anemia. Therefore, it is best to start introducing baby food such as rice after about 6 months of age.
