A man from County Limerick who physically assaulted and threatened to kill a woman at a wedding has been spared immediate imprisonment. Eoin Guiry, 33, of Kiltanna, Knockaderry, Newcastle West, attacked his partner at the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise on October 15, 2021. The lady was left visibly shaken and injured from the attack. Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald explained that Mr Guiry owned a construction business and was deeply remorseful about his conduct. He had since undergone counselling and engaged in psychotherapy to manage his anger. Judge Andrew Cody acknowledged Mr Guiry’s engagement in counselling but still viewed the “unprovoked assault” as “a very, very serious breach of trust.” He sentenced the defendant to three months in prison, which he suspended for three years on condition that Mr Guiry donates €1,000 to the Laois Domestic Violence Service.
