Killed by arrow: judges, archer acted as ‘executioner’

(ANSA) – GENOA, APRIL 10 – Evaristo Scalco, the shipwright who killed Javier Alfredo Miranda Romero in the historic center of Genoa with an arrow on the night between 1 and 2 November 2022, acted as a sort of vigilante, a man of order”. But as soon as he realized that he had fatally hit the worker, and even subsequently, he “showed a form of serious regret”.

This is what the assize court, presided over by judge Massimo Cusatti, wrote in the reasons for the 23-year sentence issued in January. The public prosecutor Arianna Ciavattini had asked for a life sentence. That night, Romero had gone out to celebrate the birth of his son with a friend. The two stood under Scalco’s window. The craftsman had appeared and had rudely addressed them (“go away, immigrants of m…”) because, according to him, they were making a racket and had urinated against the wall. The two friends had answered him and then the craftsman had taken the bow and had mounted the most lethal point that he had at home and had hit Romero. He then went down to the street and tried to extract the dart. The victim arrived in desperate conditions at the hospital where he later died. “Only from the perspective of the ‘executioner’ – continue the judges – can the sentences, tinged with an arrogance bordering on sadism, which he addressed from the top of his window ‘Does it hurt? I warned you!’ to a Romero who was also certain that he had already struck with a deadly three-edged arrow but whom he did not immediately understand that he had mortally wounded.” There were futile reasons for the Assizes. “Scalco remains (he alone, unlike the contenders) still mentally “armed” (as is, in concrete terms, his arc from the end of the first argument dating back to about a quarter of an hour before the event), he leaves the window open , as if to “seek” new opportunities for conflict on an evening which, it must be remembered, falls during the Halloween period and therefore lends itself to potential harassment and consequent clashes…” and at the end he shoots the arrow “to demonstrate that it is a man “all in one piece”, who knows how to keep both the commitments made and the threats uttered towards those who harass him”. A “motive so inconsistent that it cannot even be compared to the enormity of the criminal action carried out by Scalco”. (HANDLE).
