Kikilias: “We are doing everything we can” – There is a tough battle on two fronts – 2024-08-13 14:39:13

The men of the Fire Department are fighting the fire in Attica. However, there are now two major active fronts, as the Minister of Political Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias emphasized during the emergency briefing on the fires in Attica.

“There are two big fronts of the fire, in Kallitechnoupoli and Grammatiko”, noted the minister. While he emphasized that “we will continue with all our strength until it is brought under control and the last outbreak is extinguished”.

At the same time, as mentioned by Vassilis Kikilias, the image in Varnava, Mikrochori and Dionysos has improved.

Vassilis Kikilia’s entire statement

“Since yesterday afternoon, the residents of northeastern Attica have been tested by an extremely dangerous fire with which we have been fighting for over 20 hours under dramatic conditions and due to the strong winds, and due to the prolonged drought, but also due to the very difficult and impassable terrain in dense unburnt forest. At the moment, a fierce battle is being fought on two fronts: One is in the Kallietechnopolis area and the other is in the Grammatik area.

The image has improved in Dionysos, Varnavas and Mikrohori. They operate 670 firefighters, 27 commando teams, 183 vehicles and 32 aerial units (17 aircraft and 15 helicopters). The winds are still at 7 Beaufort today and will remain very strong in the next few hours. I want to be clear: The response by both ground and air means to the initial outbreak at Barnabas was immediate. The first air force attempted only 5 minutes after the fire started, as it was already in the air on a loaded patrol, while the first ground forces arrived within the first 7 minutes.

Gradually and in a short time the forces were continuously strengthened with the aerial forces finally reaching 29 and the firefighters exceeding 500. Unfortunately the prediction of the Risk Assessment Committee that put Attica and other regions of Greece on red alert was confirmed. We will continue with all our strength until the last outbreak is brought under control and extinguished.”

It should be noted that according to the Fire Department, at this time a total of 670 firefighters are working on the fire in Attica, 88 of which are Special Forces personnel, 27 infantry units, of which 11 are Special Forces, and 183 vehicles. Also, 17 aircraft and 15 helicopters operate – on a rotating basis.
