Kikilias: “There is no active front – They saved 45 areas” – 2024-08-15 23:30:35

“Forty hours after the extremely dangerous fire broke out in Varnavas, we can say that there is no active front, but scattered outbreaks,” said Vassilis Kikilias in his regular update.

The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, after referring to the members of the fire brigade who participated in extinguishing the fire, pointed out: “I will say once again that at the first fire on Sunday afternoon, the response time was 5 minutes by air and 7 minutes by Fire Department vehicles. This is the reality, that despite the rapid operational response, the new doctrine that combined with the technology of the drones, throughout the summer was applied to hundreds of fires, which were dealt with when there were extreme conditions, when this happens, that is, some extreme conditions and some fires , the problem becomes insurmountable.

We had danger level 5 with winds of 7 and 8 Beaufort, prolonged drought and in an area difficult to drive with these characteristics, mountain, forest, but also settlements with scattered houses. In other words, we are not talking about a simple fire that unfortunately got away, we are talking about the most difficult, dangerous scenario for all firefighters, operational and residents. This is the reality and this is what we have been called to face.

The people, the citizens, who all these hours, lived the real conditions in which we operated in NE Attica, know the situation. In the ordeal they went through, the fear, the anger, or the deep sadness because unfortunately a worker was also lost, they know that the firefighters, the police, the Local Government, the volunteers, their own people, the army, were there and fought superhumans to prevent the worst from happening. The firefighters themselves are the ones who work all summer and put out one fire after another.”
