Kijkwijzer extends classifications with ages 14 and 18 years | NOW

The Kijkwijzer has expanded its classifications with the ages fourteen and eighteen years. The pointer will also provide more background information about the different classifications.

The ages fourteen and eighteen years are added with immediate effect to the already existing classifications of six, nine, twelve and sixteen years. The fourteen year classification is awarded to productions that are too intense for children up to the age of twelve, but that are not so shocking that the classification is needed for sixteen years.

The eighteen year classification is for productions in which extreme violence or hard porn occurs. Previously, for films and series in which such scenes were featured, it was advised not to watch these under the age of sixteen. The existing legislation that is linked to the age of sixteen (Article 240a criminal law) stays unchanged.

In 2020, existing information from the Kijkwijzer will also be deepened, “so that parents and children can get more background information about the classification and the nature of individual audiovisual productions in an accessible way.”

In January this information will become available for cinema films, which will be expanded to other media during the course of the year.

The innovations are the result of a study that NICAM, the organization behind Kijkwijzer, has conducted into media use and supply.
