Detergents are discharged down the drain
These substances from detergents enter the pond with drains due to the excessive use of phosphate-containing detergents in the home and industry.
“When algae die off in reservoirs, decay processes begin, and bacteria that oxidize organic compounds, actively consuming oxygen dissolved in water, lead to oxygen starvation, death of fish and other fauna in reservoirs,” said the Kievvodokanal.
Treatment facilities are outdated
The treatment facilities of most water utilities in Ukraine, designed in the 60s of the last century, were not designed to purify wastewater from phosphates, since they were not used in such quantities at that time.
Taking into account the deterioration of treatment facilities and obsolescence of technologies using Ukrainian water utilities, it will be possible to achieve European standards for the quality of purification from wastewater phosphates only after reconstruction and modernization of treatment facilities. This requires tens of years and billions of funds that are not available today.
Which exit?
“The only way out is to ban phosphate-containing detergents at the legislative level. Promotion of such legislative initiatives and promotion of the refusal to use phosphate-containing household chemicals is the main goal of the Stop Phosphates perpetual campaign, which Kyivvodokanal introduced together with the Ukrvodokanalecology Association,” said on the page.
