Kiev residents are cautiously venturing out again after Russian troops have withdrawn from the vicinity of the city. Reporter David Jan Godfroid has now been in the Ukrainian capital for four days and notices the difference. “You really see it in the streets, it’s getting busier.”
Russia announced this week that it will drastically reduce its military activities near Kiev. The announcement raised suspicions among Ukrainians, who fear the withdrawn troops will regroup and then be deployed elsewhere in the country.
The fact is that the Russians are now being withdrawn from the north. Tonight, Defense Secretary Malyar even announced that “the entire Kiev area has been liberated from the occupiers”. Kiev has also not been bombarded by Russian rocket fire for several days.
For the people of Kiev, this is a reason to slowly pick up life again, reports reporter Godfroid. He was today at a market that has just reopened after being closed for four weeks.
