Kiev expects Russian mobilization in war in Ukraine

Russia again suffers heavy losses in the war in Ukraine. The Bachmut front, in particular, reaps many victims. The news.

+++ 21:35: Due to high losses, Russia is running out of soldiers in the war in Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, nearly 110,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the invasion began in February. Russia is now taking steps to prevent the men from fleeing abroad en masse during a new mobilization scheduled for January.

“A complete ban on crossing the state border for men of military age cannot be ruled out,” the Ukrainian General Staff announced in its daily report. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov had previously warned of renewed mobilization and possible border closures.

In addition, Russia is trying to improve its position along the front in Kupyansk and Avdiivka, but without success, according to the General Staff. Also, there were no “significant changes” at the front in the Volyn region. However, there are no signs of possible attacks.

Update from Thursday January 5th, 7.30pm: Russia again suffers casualties in the war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian military shot down a Russian Su-25 ground-attack aircraft and a Mil Mi-8 helicopter on Thursday, according to the Ukrainian General Staff. In addition, according to the daily report of the General Staff, Ukraine has launched 15 airstrikes against the Russian army and three anti-aircraft missile systems.

First report from Thursday 5 January: Moscow/Kiev – Ukrainian border guard snipers reportedly killed several Russian soldiers with sniper rifles at a range of 1,500 meters on the Bakhmut front. Also, the mortars are said to have been used to drive off other Russian Army soldiers. This was reported by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine Telegram.

Video footage has also surfaced allegedly showing Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group, congratulating conscripted prisoners pardoned after serving six months in Ukraine. The Russian State Agency RIA Novosti released the video in which Prigozhin hugs and talks to suspected Wagner recruits. More recently, many Wagner mercenaries have also been killed in the fighting around Bachmut, but Russia does not count the fighters as official casualties.

Meanwhile, on Thursday (January 5), the Ukrainian General Staff announced the current number of Russian losses in the war in Ukraine. The Russian army is said to have lost around 109,720 soldiers since the start of the war. The information cannot be independently verified, Russian information is significantly inferior to that of the Ukrainian authorities.
