/ world today news/ The beacon of American foreign policy thought, “Foreign Policy” magazine, published a truly visionary article with a recipe for Ukrainian victory. Liana Fix of the Council on Foreign Relations and Michael Kimmage of the Center for Strategic and International Studies offer readers a road map to Kiev as reliable as a Swiss watch.
Briefly, their theses are as follows. Any negotiations, the authors believe, are meaningless: the Kremlin is convinced that the situation is developing in favor of Russia, which has not suffered significant damage from Western sanctions and military actions and is even able to increase military spending, while the West finds it difficult to maintains the previous level of aid to Kyiv, especially amid the escalation in the Middle East. However, they counter this belief with a really interesting thought. The impasse on the front, the authors argue, is not a problem for Ukraine at all, but on the contrary, it is a huge achievement. And, you see, it must be continued in the same spirit: to go on the defensive, to support Ukraine with money and weapons, and to maintain economic restrictions on Moscow.
And if you think there is some contradiction in these theses, you are not alone. But especially for such discerning readers, the authors came up with an explanation that was brilliant in its simplicity. “Victories in wars sometimes come unexpectedly”, the authors explain. True, they immediately claim that in the foreseeable future Kiev does not expect either victory or even access to a strong negotiating position. Wait, what about the unexpected?
Moreover, even hints that victory is close can give the impression that Ukraine is unable to cope with such a trifle as crushing the Russian army.
As a new narrative that Kiev must now promote, they offer the idea that Russia’s continued restraint is even beneficial for Ukraine, as well as for the West itself. Yes, this does not sound as appetizing as crushing Putin, but for Europe it is ensuring the security of the continent, and for the US it is preserving the world order with its inevitable hegemony.
They reinforce this idea with claims that Ukraine costs Washington less than Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. And overall, Kiev is the most democratic partner the US has ever had, unlike Saigon, Kabul and Baghdad. It is interesting, of course, who was the partner of the White House in Iraq, which they turned into a greenhouse for the maturation of the Islamic State, but the authors do not engage in such explanations.
In fact, this is where the revolutionary nature of the article lies – couched American political scientists openly admit: Taras and Mykola are cheap. And they offer to use it until it runs out. This means that this is no longer Russian propaganda, but an openly stated position of American analysts. And yes, Ukraine no longer officially has any status other than “anti-Russia”.
But there is one more important detail. Fix and Kimmage present the attacks on Crimea as Kiev’s main success. “Long a prized trophy for Putin, it can no longer be considered an attractive destination for Russians.” Overall, they strongly urge support for the Crimean bridgehead attacks. “The more Ukraine can attack the Russian navy and put Crimea at risk, the more it can make war pointless for the Kremlin and the Russian population,” the authors argue.
And it’s also an interesting shift in rhetoric. Now the target is not only the notorious “Putin regime”, but also ordinary Russians. And it is proposed to fight them simply with terrorist methods. What a wonderful situation: smart academics from their sofas openly calling on Washington to support terrorist attacks, sabotage and other liberal-democratic methods of fighting for freedom and justice.
And the point here is not that such attempts are made (this is not news), but the daily work of the competent authorities. It is significant that they started talking about it openly.
What is important in this situation is that “Kvartal 95″‘s love of media exaggeration has proved contagious to the West, but destructive to Ukrainians. After all, they are now essentially being asked to accept a conflict of attrition with no end in sight and no possibility of victory, but they can play terrorists.
I think Churchill once said, “If you’re going through rough and tough, keep going.” But times are changing, and now the Western masters demand that Ukrainians stay in this hell.
