“In addition to district planning, building maintenance is also one of my tasks,” reports Philipp Scheer about his new position. The 49-year-old has been working in the construction and real estate department at Kiel University of Applied Sciences since October 2024. “I think that I take on a kind of switch function.” This means that Scheer plans and initiates structural measures, but also hands over tasks to the right places. The Kiel resident is optimistic about his professional future because the content of the job advertisement already appealed to him: “The idea of neighborhood development, that you can do something with the area here and that Kiel University of Applied Sciences ensures that what happens here also happens “It works, that was fascinating.”
If you like, the new job brings Scheer full circle: After his time in military service, he trained as an architectural draftsman and then decided to study architecture at the Kiel University of Applied Sciences – at that time still in Eckernförde. Why did he take this path? “My father was an architect and built silo systems, fertilizer and grain storage facilities,” he reports. Even as a child, he looked at his father’s building plans and could imagine what the buildings would one day look like.
Scheer only moved to Canada for an internship in an architectural office. Otherwise he remained loyal to northern Germany. He feels connected to his homeland: “I’m a Kieler through and through,” he says of himself. “Schleswig-Holstein is very, very beautiful – it clears your head so wonderfully.” Perfect for stressful times, because then white Scheer, what helps him best: Step one: Sit by the water. Step two: Open a drink of choice. And step three: stare stubbornly at the water for five minutes. “Then your head will be clear again,” he promises.
But Scheer doesn’t just stare at the water: he used to row a lot. It’s almost a family tradition. “We don’t sail, we don’t canoe, we row,” he says. But that has become less. “Now I really enjoy collecting books, comics and exhibition catalogs for comic exhibitions. But these have to be something special,” he emphasizes. His new workplace also seems to be something special for him: “For me, the University of Applied Sciences has always been part of Kiel.” Opposite Scheer’s old school on Knooper Weg was the former technology department. Scheer: “She was always on my mind and now I work here. This is actually very nice.”
