Interim use area shines in new splendor
For seven years now, Kiel-Marketing has been supporting interested artists and cultural workers, young entrepreneurs, clubs and other institutions in the implementation of interim uses.
During this time, over 60 projects from a wide range of areas have been implemented in more than 15 properties. In addition, there are over 100 projects in the pop-up pavilion. Nevertheless, Kiel’s inner city management would like to focus even more on this opportunity. Inner city manager Jonas Godau from Kiel-Marketing sees further potential in communication: “We must not see interim uses as gap fillers. They have developed into an important part of a lively inner city, as they allow us to bring many uses to the inner city that are otherwise hardly represented.” The regular change should therefore not be seen as a failure, as many of the projects are designed for this short-term nature. Interim uses also function as a kind of future laboratory in which ideas are tested, some of which, such as K-Idol’s K-Pop store at Holstenstrasse 45-47, become permanently established.
The temporary use of Holstenstrasse 13-15 is not entirely new either – numerous projects have already been implemented here – but the property now has a new look. “We renovated the area to underline the value of the individual projects and to promote the space with its overarching function,” explains Godau, adding: “The motto Project roomsis intended to make the temporary, experimental character clear to passers-by and to arouse their curiosity, while also appealing to those who are looking for such uses.”
The premises at Holstenstraße 13-15 offer cultural and creative professionals, entrepreneurs, initiatives and associations the opportunity to realize their ideas right in the heart of the city. Previous uses range from second-hand stores to exhibitions by artists to interactive projects such as drum workshops.
Passers-by can also look forward to exciting projects in the future: Birgitt Krämer and Gundula Boehnke-Naujoks will be exhibiting their works on site until Saturday, August 31, 2024. The two artists present maritime, floral and abstract paintings in watercolor, oil and acrylic. Afterwards, a diverse program with exhibition formats, arts and crafts and pop-up stores awaits guests, including with the artists Ivon Kim, Manuel Puderbach, Kristin Preugschat and Susanne Hoff-Johannsen as well as Vintagefit and Scan Kids. In addition, there are still some free periods available, which can be found on the website www.kieler-innenstadt.de/projektraeume can be found.
The new design is also intended to make owners more aware of the value-enhancing option of using the space temporarily. Kiel Marketing sees potential for improvement in areas that are not available for interim use. “Thanks to the users’ efforts, the areas are upgraded in many ways, the uses prevent decay and vandalism, and attention to the rooms is increased and thus visibility for long-term tenants,” says Godau, summarizing the advantages of interim use. And if uses through pop-up stores or exhibition projects are not possible, window dressing is also an option for improving the image of the property.
If you are interested and would like to make a property in the city center available for temporary use or have an idea for how it could be used, you can contact the Kiel City Center Management team at [email protected].
The stickering and renovation of Project Room 13 was made possible by the funding program “Sustainable Inner Cities and Centers” of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB).
