Wim Kieft hopes and expects that Johan Derksen, Wilfred Genee and René van der Gijp will be able to ‘get back together at the table’ after the summer at Veronica Inside. That is what the former football player prescribes in his column The Telegraph, in which he deals with ‘the Arie Boomsma’s of this world’, Edgar Davids, Dries Boussatta and Memphis Depay for their role in the racism debate and the ad boycott of the football talk show. Kieft also questions the credibility of the way the Orange internationals unanimously turned against Veronica Inside.
Even if Veronica Inside does not return to television after the summer, it is good according to Kieft that the program has been broadcast for years. Nevertheless, the former Orange international expresses the hope and expectation that the trio will come together when the material has settled. “What is happening now, with responding to everything and not swallowing big words about each other, is precisely the strength of the program and of the personalities Derksen, Genee and Van der Gijp”, says Kieft, who considers it unjustified how Derksen has been attacked. “If you follow the substantive discussion about racism in connection with Veronica Inside, Derksen is held accountable for the evils of the past 400 years, for racism and slavery. That goes too far, of course. Now and then he is straightforward, sometimes clumsy in his statements, but Derksen is certainly not a racist. ”
‘Racist’ remark Derksen is wrong: ‘Outrageous that it still occurs’
Kieft calls racism a ‘serious theme’. He says he understands the sensitivities, but he would rather hear ‘the right people’ speak more often. “Independent thinkers and not the Arie Boomsma’s of this world. Like many others of any race, color or religion, he was once offended by Derksen and Van der Gijp. Now he sees an opportunity to profile himself and call for an ad boycott. Nice opportunistic behavior to try to kill a program ”, says Kieft, according to which the viewers of the program are portrayed as ‘tokkies, racists and Wilders voters’. According to him, viewers come from all walks of life. “It is an insult to see how inferior they are put away by some types in the media. What to think of the always offended behavior of boys like Edgar Davids and Dries Boussatta. If you want to have an adult discussion about racism, you are not waiting for their input, “says Kieft, who was also at the table on Monday evening in the theme broadcast of Veronica Inside about racism.
Kieft prefers to hear Ruud Gullit or Henk Fraser speak. The Sparta Rotterdam trainer said this week Algemeen Dagblad that he sees people on television who feel hurt everywhere. “They are victims of this, of that, of such and such. I cannot stand that howling,” said Fraser. Kieft agrees with his words: “I heard him this week and immediately thought: ‘Henk for President’ Superior, standing above the situation, someone who identifies, maintains his dignity and highlights both sides. He contributes to a healthy discussion and does not get carried away with that wrong polarizing camp behavior ”, continues Kieft, who has the ‘nuanced opinion’. van Fraser calls it a relief. “Contrast the behavior of Memphis Depay. The man who encourages a boycott of Veronica Inside by Orange.”
“They’re victims of this, of that, I can’t stand that howling”
The players of the Dutch national team announced on social media en masse that they were behind the boycott. “So-called,” says Kieft. “Tell me how it goes with players. Depay demands action, captain Virgil van Dijk agrees and everyone feels the obligation to support the statement in order not to undermine the group unit. ” Kieft discusses the action of Depay, who posted an edited photo of Johan Derksen showing him with a clown nose. “When a serious discussion about racism is being conducted in Veronica Inside. Then you show that the subject of racism does not interest you at all, does not interest you. You are mainly concerned with yourself, profiling yourself by polarizing instead of contributing to combating the racism problem present in the Netherlands. But that’s nothing new for those who see all those social media videos Depay posts. ”
