BPJS Health reveal catastrophic illness like failure kidney consumes a very high state budget. Their data, the total cost spent on treatment kidney failure reached IDR 6.5 trillion.

“Although during the pandemic there was a decrease in overall health care visits, especially for catastrophic cases such as kidney failure, it remained high because participants continued to visit the hospital regularly to receive services. In 2021, there were 6.3 million failed services (cases). kidney at a cost of around Rp. 6.5 trillion,” said BPJS Kesehatan Managing Director Ali Ghufron Mukti as quoted from BetweenThursday (9/3).
For information, catastrophic disease is a disease that requires long and high-cost medical treatment, such as heart disease, kidney failure, cancer, stroke, liver cirrhosis, thalassemia, leukemia, and hemophilia.
Catastrophic diseases, including kidney failure, are diseases whose treatment is covered by the National Health Insurance-Healthy Indonesia Card Program (JKN-KIS). The program is managed directly by BPJS Health.
In 2018-2021, as much as 21-25 percent of health care costs were used to cure catastrophic diseases. In fact, kidney failure costs up to 10 percent of the total budget for catastrophic diseases.
Even so, BPJS Kesehatan guarantees that health services for kidney failure will still be provided with details of Rp. 378 million for organ transplants, Rp. 92 million for hemodialysis per year, and other health services of Rp. 76 million per year per person.
“Kidney transplant services are currently recommended by experts as a better therapy than other therapies because it makes the quality of life better,” he said.
However, hospitals and organ donors for kidney transplants are still very limited. There are only 10 hospitals that are able to carry out this medical procedure.
Currently, people who suffer from kidney failure are still dominated by the elderly and men. Where these circles routinely perform hemodialysis alias dialysis.
