The Lego statue of André Hazes that was stolen from its place on Damplein in Amsterdam on Wednesday has resurfaced: at the New Year’s Eve association ‘De Geitefok’ in Oldeberkoop, Friesland.

The association posted a photo of the statue on Facebook. There, the members write that with the stunt they want to draw attention to the heavy corona times that have gripped the Netherlands for almost two years. “We struggled through this crisis with blood, sweat and tears. The water is on the lips of the entrepreneurs, and the healthcare staff is working hard,” says chairman Jan-Bart Hof. “We hope that 2022 will be a better year for everyone, and that we can finally say goodbye to all the annoying measures.”

Such New Year’s Eve stunts are an old Frisian tradition. ‘De Geitefok’ also has a history in this area: the letters ‘Lelystad Airport’ have already been removed, and the group managed to steal the Olympic rings from the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam.

Agreements are now also being made with the donors of this statue – widow Rachel Hazes and entrepreneur Won Yip – for a safe return. “The statue has been treated well,” the club claims. “We regularly gave him a can of beer.”
