Next weekend, September 21st/22nd, ten children’s bicycle demonstrations will be taking place in Berlin’s districts. The children are saying loud and clear: Whether on foot or by bike – we finally want to get to school independently and safely.
It’s the start of school and parents in Berlin are asking themselves: How safe is the route to school for my child? There are no traffic lights here, no zebra crossing there, cars are racing around the corner there, there are so many parked cars at the back that the children can’t see the street. And in front of the school there are other parents’ cars queuing up. Dangerous, precarious situations arise again and again.
Immediate action is required. The warm words of Transport Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) about “consideration” are not enough. There has to be a better and safer way!
- Ten danger spots on the way to school must be identified and eliminated each year, according to the Mobility Act.
- There needs to be school streets in front of every school in Berlin – at least temporarily, or better yet, permanently. The Kidical Mass Alliance has started a petition and is calling for support:
- School routes must be so safe that parent taxis are no longer needed.
- In addition, there is a need for a 30 km/h speed limit, protected cycle paths and thus a transport policy in Berlin that focuses primarily on the weakest in order to ensure truly good coexistence.
Let’s go to Kidical Mass!
Whether you are cycling to school, to sports or just taking a ride around the neighbourhood – Cycling is fun, cycling is freedom. We make this experience possible with our Kidical Mass action weekend.
The children and their families ride down the street with colorful signs and balloons, accompanied by our stewards and the Berlin police. It’s fun! For many children it is a great experience to finally be able to ride a bike safely and independently on the street together with many other children. The demos take place at a child-friendly pace and there are breaks.
These are the children’s bicycle demonstrations, which are supported by numerous other local initiatives and groups:
