Emden – Everyday life in the regional league has returned to Kickers Emden. After the euphoria surrounding the cup clash against VfL Osnabrück, disillusionment set in again on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,700 spectators. The Emder deservedly lost 3-0 to 1. FC Phönix Lübeck in the first game of the second half of the season. They met an opponent who was both physically and technically superior. Kickers hardly created any clear chances to score. They had a lot of trouble, especially in the first half. After the change, when almost half the team was replaced, things went a little better. But real danger rarely arose.
“The game on Wednesday obviously left its mark,” said BSV coach Stefan Emmerling. “They tried to motivate the team and make changes.” Compared to the cup game, there were three new players in the starting line-up: Kai Kaissis, David Schiller and Said Abbey. But their motivation was dampened after five minutes. It was the guests’ first attack. Jonathan Stöver fought his way into the Emden penalty area, but Kaissis was taken off his feet. Johann Berger safely converted the penalty to make it 0-1.
And again Kickers had to chase down 0-1. They tried long-range shots from Janek Siderkiewicz (13′) and Said Abbey (15′), but Lübeck’s goalkeeper Carl Leonhard had no problems and was able to easily intercept the balls. The guests had physical advantages, which they also used to some extent. So Kickers was hardly dangerous in front of the Lübeck goal. However, referee Julian Meckfessel’s interpretation of duels was somewhat inexplicable. The game was by no means unfair. Nevertheless, he handed out a total of eleven yellow cards. Seven for Kickers (including one for Markus Unger for complaining) and four for Lübeck.
Shortly before the break, Phoenix almost made it 0-2. After a pass from Obina Iloka to Tony Lesueur, his shot was missed by Marcel Bergmann, who reacted brilliantly (44′). After the change, Emmerling brought in four new players because he had to react to the weak first half. “We couldn’t do much against it today. That’s why we tried to bring in fresh people through substitutions in the second half when we were playing for our goal,” said Emmerling.
And you also had the feeling that things were going a little better. Nevertheless, you always had to watch out for dangerous counter-attacks from Lübeck. The next setback came in the 60th minute. After a right cross, Stöver headed into the goal from close range through Bergmann’s legs to make it 0-2. In the period that followed, Emder tried to build up pressure somehow, but there was just not enough. Schiller’s objections also found no takers. Niklas von Aschwege had Emden’s greatest opportunity in the 80th minute (!). His powerful 28-meter shot missed the left post by just millimeters.
Shortly before the end of the game there was also a setback for Emden’s goalkeeper Bergmann. During one of his outings he lost the ball to Julius Kliti. He thanked him and shot the ball into the empty goal to make it 0:3 (87th). After the game, Lübeck’s coach Christiano Dinalo Adigo was pleased with his team’s performance. “We had to put in a top performance today. My team did that at times and then deserved to win by that amount.” Stefan Emmerling found words of comfort for his players at the press conference. “We have to admit that the team didn’t have a good game after the great first half of the season.” Now it’s time to check things off and prepare for the next highlight at SV Meppen.
