Kicked Out, Glasses-Free 3D Comes Back Through the Window Thanks to Samsung

The technology was thought to have been forgotten for the last decade, but it has made an unexpected comeback since Gamescom, currently taking place in Cologne.

The giant Samsung is taking advantage of its stand at the largest European video game show to present Odyssey 3D, a new monitor offering so-called autostereoscopic 3D.

Towards a return of 3D?

Quite popular in the 2010s in the wake of the film Avatarwhose success encouraged television and monitor manufacturers to offer innovative products, 3D ultimately never really took off. To the point that we think we’ve traveled back in time when we discover Samsung’s new screen!

Available in two sizes (27” and 37”), the Odyssey 3D is primarily designed for gaming. The QLED panels display a 4K resolution and a maximum frequency of 165 Hz. With a gray-to-gray latency of just 1 ms and modern connectivity based on HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 ports, it offers all the conveniences expected by gamers in 2024.

The particularity of this model is therefore the adoption of Light Field Display (LFD) technology which simulates 3D content from flat 2D images. Thanks to a thin lens placed on the panel, the screen is able to send a slightly different image to the right eye and the left eye in order to give a depth effect to any content. The reliability of the system is also ensured by an eye tracking system (eye tracking) which allows the display to be corrected according to the position of the user.

An extended Odyssey range

In addition to this screen, which, for the moment, has neither a release date nor an associated price, Samsung is taking advantage of Gamescom in Cologne to launch three new models in the Oddysey range.

The Odyssey OLED G85SD comes with a 34” diagonal, a definition of 3440×1440 pixels and above all an 1800R curvature for maximum immersion in games. Suitable for competitive gaming, this high refresh rate screen (175 Hz) does not exceed 0.03 ms of latency according to the manufacturer. It is announced at €1099.

Finally, the Odyssey OLED G95SD (49”) and OLED G93SD push all the sliders with a definition of 5120×1440 pixels in 32:9 format, a 1800R curvature and a framerate announced at 240 Hz for exceptional fluidity. Their price is still unknown.
