Concert in the monastery: kick-off of the Rheingau Music Festival

Eltville Concert in the monastery: The Rheingau Music Festival (RMF) kicked off on Saturday evening in the former Cistercian abbey in Eberbach near Eltville. This is one of the largest series of events of this kind in Germany.

With around 1300 listeners, the opening concert was sold out. According to the organizers, the guest list included Hesse’s new head of government and RMF patron Boris Rhein, his predecessor in both offices, Volker Bouffier (both CDU), and Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD).

The former Cistercian Abbey of Eberbach in the Hessian Rheingau is widely known as the location of the film “The Name of the Rose”. The concert program with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and the MDR Radio Choir included works by Antonín Dvořák and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, whose death this year marks the 175th anniversary.

According to the organizers, one of the largest music festivals in Germany is taking place in its 35th season until September 3rd with 134 concerts and a total capacity utilization of currently around 86 percent. The artists present themselves at 25 venues, including castles, churches and wineries, in the Rheingau and in neighboring regions, including in Rhineland-Palatinate. Pandemic restrictions at the concerts, such as minimum distances and seating in a checkerboard pattern, are no longer in place for the time being.

Under the motto “Cohesion” and with a budget of eight million euros, numerous ensembles are expected. The focus is on the violinist Julia Fischer and the pianist Jan Lisiecki. Concerts with boys’ choirs are also planned, including the Regensburger Domspatzen. Guest soloists include violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, tenor Jonas Kaufmann and pianist Daniil Trifonov. Jazz should also be heard. For example, drummer Wolfgang Haffner makes several appearances.
