And this time, for the first time in the model’s rich 28-year history, a special version for the European market has been created for the Sportage, designed and adapted specifically to European tastes.

The new Kia Sportage hybrid powertrains significantly reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. The Hybrid (HEV) model is another new addition to Sportage’s history, with the addition of the Partial Hybrid (MHEV) version and the new Rechargeable Hybrid (PHEV), which will go into production a little later in February next year.

PHEV’s priority is to drive 100% in electric mode, which provides accessibility to most daily routes, such as from home to work or daily shopping habits. The latest generation of internal combustion petrol and diesel (ICE) engines is also available in various versions of efficiency, transmission and power.

Due to the modern equipment of the Kia Slovakia plant, all four types of Sportage power units – PHEV, HEV, MHEV and ICE – will be produced in Žilina.

In addition to the standard front-wheel drive, the new Sportage models will also produce an all-wheel drive version in Slovakia, as well as a GT-Line version. There will be another new Sportage addition to Europe: the black roof for the GT-Line version.

The Slovak plant has produced three generations of the Sportage model, starting with its second generation in 2006. Since then, around two million Sportages have been produced in Slovakia, of which 104,500 are second-generation, 797,500 third-generation and more than one million previous-generation models, which went into production at the end of 2015. Since the start of production in Slovakia in 2006, four million Kia units have been produced in Europe, with the round anniversary car rolling off the assembly line earlier this year.

The new generation Kia Sportage will hit the Baltic market later this year.
