KI University: UTN opens first building and presents research

At the opening of the first campus building, scientists at the Technical University of Nuremberg (UTN) will show what is already possible in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) at the university. For example, a drone that can use AI to recognize and fly towards objects and people. The technology will be used to search for missing people. AI is also making rapid progress in facial recognition – faces are analyzed and age and gender are specified in a matter of seconds.

UTN should take a pioneering role in AI

“We can neither ignore AI nor let it loose on society. We have to shape it in a responsible way. And I believe that the UTN is ideally positioned for this with its combination of humanities, social sciences, technology and AI,” says the new founding president Michael Huth , who is considered a luminary in the field of AI.

The Technical University of Nuremberg is set to become the first AI university in Germany. That is the goal of the Bavarian state government. “We have to be at the forefront of this issue,” emphasized Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) at the opening of the first UTN building.

A new campus in Nuremberg

The university campus in the southeast of Nuremberg is currently being built on 37 hectares, which is equivalent to more than 50 football fields. The administration and the university administration will move into the first building. In the coming years, the entire university site will be gradually built using modular construction. It will be the first climate-neutral campus in Germany and will offer space for up to 6,000 students and around 200 professors.

The university has already started operations. Research and teaching will temporarily take place in rooms in the south of Nuremberg. The UTN was founded three years ago. It is the first new state university to be founded in Bavaria in 40 years.
