The biggest surprise team of this year’s BL qualifiers, Faroe semi-professional champion KÍ Klaksvík, after eliminating Hungarian champion Ferencváros and Swedish champion BK Häcken, won their first match against Norwegian champion Molde 2-1.
KÍ has played 0-0 draws both times in its previous matches at home, and although both teams had a great chance in the first half, it seemed that they would continue this streak. At the beginning of the second half, however, Molde took the lead through Magnus Eikrem, so for the first time this year the Faroese team had to run on home ground after the result.
The hero of the Faroes, Árni Frederiksberg, who doubled against Fradi and Häcken, did not let his team down: a quarter of an hour later with an incredible twist equalized, and in the 89th minute, at the end of a counter attack, he bombed a huge goal into the Norwegians’ goal, thus changing the score to 2-1. Molde had another great chance in the five-minute extra time, but they did not hit the goal.
Thus, KÍ won in the first game for the first time this year, and with the advantage they can travel to Norway next week. If it were to succeed in this round, which it has an increasingly realistic chance of doing, then only the playoffs would separate it from the BL group round, and if it remained at the bottom, the E group round would already be guaranteed for the team. He said everything about Klaksvík that one of their players, René Shaki Joensen, is a part-time electrician.
The current march of the team can be safely called the new golden era of Faroese football, in which a Hungarian specialist, Géza Turi, also plays a role. The former Zalaegerszeg and Tatabánya goalkeeper moved to Feröer in 2006, where he defended more than two hundred championships in various teams, and since his retirement he has been the goalkeeper coach of Klaksvík.
