KHL Star Games teams will be formed on a geographical basis

The Continental Hockey League announced on Monday that voting for the Star Game has begun, in which teams will be divided geographically this year.

Usually, teams from four divisions competed in the KHL All-Star Game, but this year four teams will be formed by geographical regions – Russia, North America, Scandinavia and Eurasia.

Only Russian players will be able to be in the Russian national team, but Canadian and American hockey players will be able to join the North American team. In turn, the Scandinavian team will be able to include players from Denmark, Finland and Sweden, and the Eurasian team will include hockey players from other countries.

KHL President Andrei Morozov pointed out that after the 2020 Star Game, which took place in Moscow, several options for organizing the event were considered, but the most suitable one was chosen to select according to the geographical principle.

“A lot of hockey players from different countries of the world play in our league, and we want to show that KHL is not just Russia,” Morozov added.

Each regional team will have two goalkeepers, nine field players and two coaches.

Last season, the Star Game was supposed to take place in Riga, but Covid-19 was canceled due to the pandemic. Lauris Dārziņš represented Riga’s “Dinamo” at the Star Game in 2020.
