Khedira: “I didn’t come to see sights”

Madrid, Turin, Berlin – you can live in these European cities. Sami Khedira, Hertha’s newest addition, knows that too. But the 2014 world champion did not come to the German capital to end his career at the age of 33. But on the contrary.

Appreciates the German capital – and from now on also wants to convince in terms of sport: Hertha newcomer Sami Khedira.

Hertha BSC had barely announced the well-known newcomer Sami Khedira early on Monday evening when the Berliners published a first interview on their club website with the former national player, who sees himself “in a young team as a seasoned player who should bring stability to the table”.

And in this, Khedira made it clear, among other things, that he does not think he is at the end of his career. The tank is still full – and the beautiful capital, which radiates “just an incredible amount of power”, as well as the impressive Olympic Stadium with its “beautiful architecture” are just an addition. In essence, the man who, according to Hertha, signed his contract (which will run until summer) at the airport, is essentially about: “I didn’t come here to see sights, but to play football and be successful!”

“My fitness value is good”

As is well known, Khedira has always been successful in his impressive career: In Stuttgart she matured to a Bundesliga professional, national player and German champion in 2007, learned at Real Madrid at the side of the best and, among other things, won the Champions League in 2014 and most recently in Italy with Juventus for years Serie A dominates. This vita is impressive, especially since the 2014 world championship has also been added.

Health question marks that have come up again and again in recent years (numerous injuries, heart surgery), according to his own statements, no longer hold the midfield all-rounder. Neither is the fact that he was recently completely sorted out and that he played his last professional game to date in the second leg of the Cup semi-final against Milan (0-0) on June 12, 2020: “Of course you can’t dismiss that, that I don’t have any competitive experience at the moment, but I’ve been training with the first team since the summer. […] I was there in every tactical session and in every replacement training session. Of course I need rhythm, we don’t have to discuss that. But my fitness level is good, and I also had the football-specific units. When you train with world class players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Giorgio Chiellini and Alex Sandro, you are always challenged. ”

“I can hardly wait for the moment”

Now Khedira wants to challenge and support the young Berlin team, which with a meager 17 points from 19 games is deep in the relegation battle. In his professional career, being confronted with the opportunity to be relegated for the first time is what drives the ex-international as well as fighting for titles in recent years: “I want to win and it doesn’t matter whether you’re a champion or you are in the table region Hertha is currently in. To get out of there you have to win, that’s what it’s all about. […] Now it’s about survival, we have to win, fight, show mentality and passion. I am convinced that I can help with my character traits. ”

And if possible, directly against the best in the Bundesliga. Because already this Friday (8.30 p.m., LIVE! At kicker), when Khedira can appear for his new club for the first time, the reigning triple champion Bayern Munich will be visiting the capital. Does the veteran feel ready for such a task? “Sure, of course! Physically and mentally, I’m definitely ready for action. […] Honestly, I can hardly wait for the moment to be on the pitch in the blue and white jersey for the first time. ”
