Khadija Arib wants to become president again after the elections in March 2021. She feels it her social duty to continue, she says on Friday. The Telegraph.
“Continuity, stability and experience are important in the Chamber and certainly also for the Chamber presidency,” Arib told the newspaper.
Arib is the first president of Moroccan descent and of dual nationality. She succeeded VVD member Anouchka van Miltenburg, who stepped down at the end of 2015 after strong criticism of her performance.
If Arib is not re-elected as president by the new House of Representatives, she wants to continue as a Member of Parliament. “If you are elected to the Chamber, you should also just sit in the Chamber,” she says The Telegraph. Arib has always criticized MPs who left parliament in the meantime for a job elsewhere.
The PvdA is happy that Arib wants to be back on the list. PvdA leader Lodewijk Asscher tweets that he is proud of Arib, “President of all Dutch people”.
In the previous elections in 2017, Arib was in second place on the PvdA list. The PvdA does not want to say where it is now. That is up to the party board and that will come with the list at the end of November, says a spokesman.
In previous elections, Arib, whose portfolio included the healthcare sector, was much lower on the list. At party conferences she managed to get a higher ranking with the support of the PvdA members.
