Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov reached the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters tournament in Madrid.
The 26-year-old Russian, seeded at the tournament under the tenth number, in the fourth round beat compatriot Andrei Rublev, the fifth seed, with a score of 7:6 (10:8), 6:4.
In head-to-head meetings, their score was 3–2 in favor of Khachanov; however, before the current meeting, he won Rublev for the last time in 2019.
Khachanov’s next opponent will be the winner of the pair Carlos Alcaras (Spain) – Alexander Zverev (Germany).
Rublev lost in the final of the tournament in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Khachanov takes 12th place in the world ranking. The athlete has four ATP titles, he is the silver medalist of the Tokyo Olympics in singles.
Rublev takes sixth place in the world ranking. The Russian has 12 ATP titles. At the Tokyo Olympics, he became the Olympic champion in the mixed doubles. In April, Rublev won the Masters in Monte Carlo, and then reached the final of the tournament in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The tournament in Madrid will end on May 7th. The prize fund of the competition is €7.7 million. The Masters series is second in importance only to the Grand Slam and the ATP Finals.
