The American fast food chain KFC will include “foods of the future” in its diet. In response to the growing popularity of a healthy lifestyle and the higher demand for mass alternatives, it will launch the development of innovative, more environmentally friendly food technologies.

“At KFC, we carefully monitor all trends and innovations and try to keep up with the times by introducing advanced technologies to our restaurants,” said Russian KFC manager Raisa Polyak in a statement. The new product should be launched in Moscow for the first time this autumn.

The aim of the project is to create the first chicken nuggets in the world, which will be made in the laboratory. KFC will print the meat pieces in a 3D bioprinter. Fastfood will cooperate with the research laboratory 3D Biosprings Solutions in their production.

3D Biosprings Solutions develops bioprinting technology using chicken cells and plant material. This allows it to reproduce the taste and texture of chicken meat. “Today, 3D printing technologies are also gaining in popularity in food production. Our collaboration with KFC will help accelerate the launch of 3D printer meat products, ”said 3D bioprinting Solutions co-founder Yusef Khesuani.

According to a study by the American Environmental Science & Technology Journal, cell meat production technology has minimal negative impact on the environment. This allows you to reduce energy consumption by more than half. Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced 25 times and 100 times less land is used than conventional on-farm meat production.

KFC will provide 3D Biosprings Solutions with all the necessary ingredients to make chicken nuggets so that it can obtain an exact copy of the KFC chicken flavor in the laboratory. The new nuggets will thus approach the original taste and appearance, while they will be more environmentally friendly than ordinary meat.
