The car equipped with so-called keyless entry remained locked and the smart key remained in the car. This is the second case that has been recorded in a short period of time by city police patrols in Brno. “She left the car running so she didn’t have to turn off the air conditioning,” explained Jakub Ghanem, a spokesman for the Brno police.
According to experts, the keyless system can fail and the car is locked unintentionally due to a technical fault or driver error. While with conventional central locking, drivers have to press a button on the remote control, the keyless system allows you to control the car without it.
“You have the key in your pocket or in your backpack, and all you have to do is approach the handle. You don’t have to take out the key at all, the car communicates with it,” explained the operation of one of the types of smart keys, service advisor Martin Matlák from the Škoda Klokočka authorized service center in Prague.

He considers it a mistake when the driver leaves the key in the car and leaves. “Anything can happen. You need to have the key with you,” added Matlák. There can be several reasons for the technical failure of the keyless system. “For example, the signal can be shielded. I’ve already seen it,” confirmed Matlák. However, he did not want to specify the type of car. “It can happen across brands and models,” he said.

Another driver also had complications with the keyless style of locking. A later check in the service confirmed the fault of the touch sensors on the handles. “When she got out, her car was unexpectedly locked, in which her one-year-old son was still sitting in a car seat. She did not have a spare key at her disposal,” explained the officers.
Therefore, the officers had to cool the car with the child inside from the outside, the boy was in danger of overheating. Therefore, they first covered the bodywork with tarpaulins that they borrowed from scooters parked nearby. “At a nearby kindergarten, they also asked for a blanket, thanks to which they shaded the windshield. At the same time, they cooled down the entire car with cold water,” described Jakub Ghanem, the spokesman for the Brno police officers.
He added that they reached through the back window to get the key, which they had to break as quickly as possible.
Both female drivers were Škoda cars, which is why the Práva editorial office contacted the manufacturer.
“We are not aware of any specific cases, so it is difficult for us to comment on this. If we found out about any, we would have the vehicle analysed,” answered press spokesman for Škoda Auto product communications Zbyněk Straškraba. He admitted that the causes could also be on the driver’s side.
“The question is also whether the customer followed the operating instructions and whether they did not ignore any warnings. For example, in a situation where he has the keys in the trunk,” commented Práva Straškraba, adding that if the car were still locked, a customer who has all Škoda Connect services activated can unlock the vehicle via a mobile phone application.
Just a few minutes
The last question is an unattended child in a car. The Central Automobile Club of the Czech Republic (ÚAMK) in cooperation with BESIP proved in a test that an adult cannot last more than 15-20 minutes in a closed vehicle in summer at a temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius.
In hot weather, police officers regularly warn motorists not to leave children or animals in hot cars, even for a short time. “During random checks, we look into cars. We always try to repeat it so that people pay attention to it,” confirmed the spokeswoman for the Prague police officers, Irena Seifertová. The reason is clear: in a few minutes, in hot weather, the car becomes a hot trap.
