Kevin Spacey was rated on Friday as a “sex harasser” by the prosecution at the start of his trial in London. The American actor is indicted for 12 assaults four men between 2001 and 2013, allegations he denies.
Spacey, 63, is “a man who does not respect boundaries or personal space,” who “likes to make other people uncomfortablea sexual harasser,” said Christine Agnew, representative of the prosecution.
After jury selection and the presentation of the charges on Wednesday, the prosecution took the floor on Friday entering the merits of a trial that will last about four weeks at Southwark Crown Court, in south London.
the hollywood star pleaded not guilty of the 12 charges against him. Under English law, alleged victims cannot be identified.
The actor, winner of two Oscars for ‘American Beauty’ (1999) and ‘The Usual Suspects’ (1995), is accused of sexually assault three men between March 2005 and April 2013, when he was director of the Old Vic Theater in London.
According to Agnew, Spacey “touched (one of the men) inappropriately (…) trying to grab her buttocksand “on several occasions (…) he grabbed (the man’s) genitals through his clothing” without his consent.
The actor is also accused of assaulting another man between 2001 and 2004, including forcing him to hold non-consensual sexual relations.
According to the prosecution, the alleged victim, after being invited by Spacey to have a drink in an apartment, fell asleep and woke up when he realized that the actor I was giving him oral sex. Despite his refusal, he continued and the victim had to push out of the apartment.
Spacey was one of the big stars caught up in the global #MeToo movement, which emerged in 2017 from the case of the all-powerful American film producer Harvey Weinstein.
He was initially accused of sexual assault by several men in the United States, which destroyed his successful career. He always denied the charges and this led him to reveal his homosexuality. Last year he was found not guilty in one of these cases by a New York civil court. And in 2019 charges were dropped in another.
