US actor Kevin Spacey has hit out at an upcoming documentary reviewing years of sexual assault allegations against him, saying it was not given enough time to to answer these charges.
The two-part documentary, called “Spacey Without a Mask,” will air on Channel 4 in Britain on May 6 and 7, and on the Max platform in the United States, according to the newspaper “The Keeper“.
The film says it includes “never-before-seen interviews and archival material” exploring Spacey’s life “from childhood to early success on Broadway and his subsequent meteoric rise to stardom”.
In July 2023, a British court acquitted the Oscar-winning actor of sexual assault charges against four men, in one of the most interesting trials of the country’s Me Too movement.
According to the official description, the series “investigates Spacey’s behavior and talks to several men who are not connected to the case about their experiences with Kevin Spacey, who have almost never spoken before .”
Spacey, who is 64 years old, said on stage “X” that he was not given enough time, seven days, as he said, to answer allegations “going back 48 years” , and the channel did not give him. with “sufficient detail to investigate these matters.”
He continued: “Channel 4 refused on the basis that they feel that a request to respond within seven days to new, anonymous and unspecified allegations is a fair opportunity for me to make any allegations against me to reject.”
Spacey continued, “He will not sit idly by and attack with a one-sided ‘documentary’ of a dying network in a desperate attempt to gain viewership ratings.”
“Each time I have been given the time and the appropriate platform to defend myself, the allegations have failed under scrutiny and I have been vindicated,” he wrote.
In a statement to Variety, Channel 4 denied Spacey’s claim of having enough time, confirming that “the film would be broadcast on May 6 and 7. Kevin Spacey has had plenty of opportunity to respond,” said The Guardian.
Spacey indicated on stage X that he would respond to the documentary over the weekend on stage.
A British court found the famous actor who appeared in court not guilty of nine sexual offenses against four men in their twenties and thirties, between 2004 and 2013.
He had previously denied 12 charges: seven sexual assaults, three indecent assaults, one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and one count of causing a person to engage in the unauthorized sexual activity.
In October 2022, a New York jury found that Spacey did not assault actor Anthony Rapp, his first public accuser, when Rapp was 14 years old and they were actors until stage unknown on Broadway in the 1980s. Raab was seeking $40 million in damages in a civil lawsuit.
The “House of Cards” star was also ordered to pay $31 million to Netflix following allegations that he “systematically preyed on, sexually harassed and molested young people with he worked throughout his career on film, television and theater projects.
An official extrajudicial arbitrator found that Spacey “repeatedly breached” contractual obligations by failing to provide services in a “professional” manner, as well as anti-harassment policies, according to the Guardian.
Since then, Spacey has been trying to rebuild his career and has achieved fame when he appeared in a theater, after his UK trial, at a theater in Oxford .
