Kevin-Prince Boateng usually keeps his word. But the former Bundesliga player turned himself into a liar for FC Barcelona, as he has now revealed.
“I still remember that moment very clearly,” said the 36-year-old in the VIBE with FIVE podcast: “When I arrived in Barcelona, they immediately asked me who the best player in the world was. I had to say it was Lionel Messi, I lied. It was one of the biggest lies of my life.”
Boateng played for FC Barcelona for six months in 2019, where he met superstar Messi: “I usually always tell the truth, but I lied because it was the only way to wear the Barcelona jersey.”
In truth, his favorite player was always Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi’s great adversary, who hunted for goals for Barca’s arch-rival Real Madrid for years.
Boateng, who ended his career after last season and will be a guest at the STAHLWERK Doppelpass on SPORT1 on Sunday, continued: “I’m sorry for the Barca fans, but as a teenager I always supported Real Madrid. I love Cristiano Ronaldo. But they told me I had to say that or I wouldn’t play.”
Boateng said that he and Messi once talked about Ronaldo in the shower.
“Messi was the captain but he didn’t talk much in the dressing room. We were talking in the shower once and he asked me if it was difficult to score goals in Italy because Ronaldo was there at the time. It showed the rivalry they had.”
To Messi’s question, he replied: “I told him that it was more difficult with Ronaldo there and that it took him three years to score a goal in every game. People forget all too quickly what he achieved there.”
