Kevin Sanjaya/Marcus Gideon confirmed to remain the winner of Group A Tokyo Olympics 2020 despite losing to Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin in the last match, Tuesday (27/7).
Kevin/Marcus lost a three-game match against Lee/Wang in the last match of Group A. The first seed at the Tokyo Olympics lost 18-21, 21-15 and 17-21.
Despite losing the last match, Kevin/Marcus are still confirmed to be Group A winners. The reason is, in the other match, the Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty managed to win two games 21-17 and 21-19 over the British doubles Ben Lane/Sean Vendy.
These results make Kevin / Marcus remain the winners of Group A because they have the advantage in game difference. Kevin/Marcus have a game score of 5-2 or +3 in three group stage matches.
Lee/Wang are confirmed to be runners-up in Group A because they have a game difference of 5-3 or +2. Followed by the Indian pair Rakinreddy/Shetty with 4-3 or +1 in third position.
If Rakinreddy/Shetty lose to Lane/Vendy in the last match of Group A, then Kevin/Marcus will certainly be runners-up. The reason is, the method used to determine the group winner is head-to-head.
In the previous match, Rakinreddy/Shetty managed to beat Lee/Wang. Meanwhile Kevin/Marcus managed to beat Rakinreddy/Shetty to secure a move to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics quarter-finals.
Three other Indonesian representatives who also made sure to qualify for the quarter-finals were Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan, women’s doubles Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu, and mixed doubles Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva.
