Kevin Magnussen suggests Nyck de Vries’ driving in their final showdown at the Austrian Grand Prix showed he is in a desperate situation and clearly racing for his future. De Vries and Magnussen also came together during the Grand Prix of Canada, and then they also collided twice in Austria.

In Montreal, De Vries and Magnussen went off track together after the Dutchman failed to overtake the Haas driver. Things also went wrong with the two in Austria. De Vries was defending tooth and nail and then he collided twice with Magnussen. The 28-year-old received a penalty for pushing Magnussen off the track. ‘He got a punishment, didn’t he?’, the Dane kicks off The Race. “So he pushed me off the track, but he’s racing, I think, for his future,” Magnussen continues. “Maybe in a bit of a desperate situation, so there’s nothing I can really say. He got a punishment, it is the way it is.’

De Vries also seemed to shrug his shoulders, as he indicated that it was not for him to judge. “The stewards gave me a penalty and we accepted it. Fortunately, we had enough of a lead not to lose any positions,” De Vries said to the British medium. “I’m not the one who decides whether I should be penalized or not, we race hard, try to push the limits and sometimes we go just over and sometimes just under.” De Vries also received two penalty points on his license for the incident with Magnussen.

De Vries: ‘You have to go to the extreme of the rules’

De Vries seemed to suggest he believes there are inconsistencies in how similar incidents are judged and said you have to go to the extreme of the race rules. “I mean, these situations happen with Yuki and Zhou, with Max and Carlos, they happen all the time. Every situation is judged a little differently and it is not so black and white,’ says the Dutchman. “Of course we understand the rule, but you have to go to the extreme of the rules to make sure you don’t fall behind, and sometimes you go over it and sometimes you fall short,” said De Vries.
