Kevin Durant passes on renewing his contract with Phoenix Suns: “We will resolve that when the time is right”

Kevin Durant has talked about the possibility of signing a one-year, $59.7 million contract extension with the Phoenix Suns for the 2026-2027 season. The player became eligible to sign the extension on July 12 and has until October 21 to do so.

“I have two years left on my contract,” Durant commented one day after turning 36 during the media day that kicks off the 2024/25 season. “I am focused on being the best I can be every day in the moment. We will resolve those things when the time is right.”

The Suns acquired Durant from the Brooklyn Nets before the 2023 trade deadline.

“Everyone talks about Kevin, Kevin loves it here,” team owner Mat Ishbia said Monday. “We love Kevin Durant. We talk to him and his agent, Rich Kleiman, all the time. We don’t talk publicly about contract extensions, but I’ll tell you this: Kevin loves him. We love Kevin. We plan for Kevin to be here. Nothing is changing with that.”

For his part, James Jones, general manager of the Suns, said: “We love having KD here. We want it here. We will figure it out. Like Mat said, we don’t talk about it a lot publicly, but what we do talk about publicly is who really wants to be here and who is a great addition for us. So we love KD, he loves it here. That goes without saying.”
