Kevin Costner’s Ambitious Project: Horizon, a 4-Film Saga of the American West

The latest project developed by Kevin Costner will have more than just the time he dedicates to it, as the actor has been known to invest a large sum of money for the production of Horizon. It is one of four films inspired by the expansion of the American West, before and after the Civil War.

Another of the data that has been known about this production is that there will be four independent films, but at the same time interconnected with stories, which would last approximately 165 minutes. The saga, whose story will span 15 years in the plot, will revolve around settlers in the western frontier settlement of the United States.

Without a doubt, it is one of Costner’s most ambitious projects since he introduced Dances with Wolves, which led to his taking home seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

As reported by Deadline, the actor would have mortgaged his house for about US$100 million, in a project that has been in production for more than 30 years. “I have mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Bárbara where I was going to build my last house,” he said in an interview with the aforementioned medium, adding that “I did it without thinking.”

On the other hand, he also said that it was likely that he would have given his accountant “the creeps” when he came up with the idea of mortgaging the property, but he clarified that he does everything because “it is my life and I believe in the idea, and in history.

It should be noted that, in 2022, it was learned that the project will have the participation of 170 characters, all with their own dialogue, as indicated by the actor in an interview with a media outlet.

But this has not been the only madness that Costner has committed when it comes to film productions. He was spending 1993, one of the most stable times of his life, like his marriage, also, as an actor he was one of the most prominent, since most producers had him on their lists to be called and they deposited their trust with a check to bearer the more than US$60 million dollars.

The actor dreamed of playing an action hero, a role that he had not yet managed to play that year, so he became interested in the story of a man who was half human, half fish. Universal Studios owned the story when Costner came up with the idea to star in it, so the producers not only didn’t say no, they signed him on for $14 million.

Who would have thought that this would be the biggest headache for the interpreter of productions like Robin Hood, The Untouchables and The Bodyguard. Well, it was not until the end of 1993, in October, when the filming began and they encountered the first problem, the construction of a floating city that weighed more than a ton, for which all the steel on the island was used. Hawaii, where the recordings were taking place.

Realizing that this was not enough for said construction, they had to bring more from the United States, in Boeing 747-type planes, for which the runway was not long enough and the study had to pay for its expansion. Added to this, they had problems with the weather due to two hurricanes that destroyed the decoration, choppy seas, stifling heat, among other problems with production and Costner’s demands.

This is how Waterworld is considered one of the films that almost sank Kevin Costner’s career in the film industry, which took time for the actor to regain the confidence of the producers.
