Kevin Costner celebrates new Western film in Berlin

Fans in cowboy outfits celebrate a Hollywood icon: Kevin Costner has come to Berlin for the German premiere of his new film. “Horizon – An American Saga” is Costner’s first directorial project in 21 years. The 69-year-old’s film is a four-part western epic.

The first, three-hour part will be released in German cinemas on August 22nd. “Horizon” is set in 1861 New Mexico. The film tells the story of white Americans who, on their journey west, occupy the lands of the Apaches who are resisting the land grab. In addition to Costner, Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington are among those starring.

Costner’s first western as a director, “Dances with Wolves” from 1990, won seven Oscars. Before “Horizon”, his most recent western was “Open Range” in 2003. In recent years, Costner played a leading role in the acclaimed western series “Yellowstone” by Taylor Sheridan.

Costner is taking a risk with “Horizon”. He had been pursuing the idea for the film for over 30 years, but, according to his own words, was unable to reach an agreement with a production company. In the end, after several failed attempts to get financing, he put his own money into the film, as he said in interviews. In 2009, he even named his son Hayes after one of the film’s protagonists.
