Kevin Barra: SV Burgaltendorf Midfielder Answers RevierSport Questionnaire

Kevin Barra is a well-known name in amateur football in Essen. The SV Burgaltendorf player answers our RevierSport questionnaire.

Things aren’t going so well for Kevin Barra with SV Burgaltendorf. To date, the Essen team has not been able to achieve more than a midfield position. The club had made promotion to the national league its goal.

Barra, who has already experienced so much in his footballing life and beyond, is also disappointed. After all, he, who has already played 283 league games and 34 regional league matches, was supposed to lead the Burgaltendorfers back towards the state league.

The 33-year-old midfielder answered our RevierSport questionnaire.

My greatest strength is… my shooting technique.

My biggest weakness is… my physicality.

In our dressing room… there is always a good mood and a Stauder is a must.

The best moment of my football career was… of course the promotions from the state to the regional league with FC Kray. That was simply fantastic and I believe that no Essen club will repeat it again. We have written amateur football history in Essen. I’m proud that I was able to write part of it.

The best goal of my career was… a goal with Schonnebeck against Ratingen. I hit the right crease from half left. The ball was stuck up there in the corner. Just perfect!

I didn’t become a professional footballer because… unfortunately I had a stroke of fate when I was 16. I had to take a break for eight months after a robbery. Yes, and at that point I was doing very well at VfL Bochum and under coach Andreas Urban. I was one of the best in the B1 at the time. Sascha Lewandowski gave a training session for the most talented U17, U19 and U23 players and I was there too. But after the forced break, nothing was as it once was. I then had to think about whether I even wanted to play football anymore. Andreas Winkler, the junior boss at Rot-Weiss Essen at the time, suggested a fresh start to me and I moved to RWE. But it was clear to me then that I would no longer be a professional. I started and completed training.

The best thing about the Ruhr area is… the city of Essen.

Either … or?

Dortmund or Schalke? Dortmund.

Beer or water? Beer.

Club or pub? Pub.

Natural or artificial turf? I am a child of the Ashes and have always enjoyed playing on natural grass. Later, when the artificial turf in Kray was finished, I appreciated it. Therefore: formerly natural – now artificial turf.

Fighter or artist? I can do both, but then I’m more of an artist.

Football on TV or stadium? I used to enjoy being on a curve with a beer in my hand, but today I’m comfortable at home.

Finally, a few questions:

Who would you like to have a beer with? Lionel Messi. For me he is the best footballer. He is more complete than Cristiano Ronaldo. I have a few questions for Lionel.

What can you laugh about?

Above all. About jokes, but also about myself.

What is essential for you?

My family! Which now consists of my wife and our two children.

What music do you like to listen to and what’s playing in the cabin?

I now hear everything – every direction. Johnny Sylt is our music man in the dressing room. He does it well (laughs).

If you could start over, what would you do differently in your life?

I am completely satisfied and fulfilled. After the robbery at the latest, my motto in life is the following: That’s life – sometimes the sun shines, sometimes it rains.
