(JH) The U20s will start the championship season 2021/22 as the first Krefeld ice hockey team. As early as September 4th, the selection of head coach Robin Beckers will be about the first points in Division 1 of the German Junior League. The Krefeld team will then be guests of the championship favorites Jungadler Mannheim.
After the penultimate season had to be canceled in March 2020 due to the corona pandemic, the 2020/21 season almost completely fell victim to the pandemic. After a break of more than ten months, the games in Mannheim on September 4th and 5th are the first championship games. Because many players have outgrown the junior age or have made the leap to the seniors prematurely, coach Beckers has to completely reorganize his team. He has very little time for this because the Rhineland Hall and the Werner Rittberger Hall in Krefeld will not be available until September 7th due to the defective ice processing system. After talks between the Sports and Baths Office and the Yayla Arena, the team has been able to train in the penguins’ home arena since Monday. “Then there are still school holidays, so we can train five days in the first week. After that, it’s three times a week on the ice, ”says Beckers. There are five preparation games on the program before the point game starts. On August 14th and 15th the game will be in Düsseldorf, on August 22nd it will be in Iserlohn and on August 28th and 29th there will be tests in Cologne.

In addition to the players who have moved up from the U17 to the U20, the KEV also reports two newcomers. Goalkeeper Daniel Biggins has moved from Bad Tölz to Krefeld. He will fight for the place in goal with Leon Jessler and Mathis Kaiser. Striker Nick Kardas comes from DEG and should become a constant in attack.

From the first day of play on, it is against relegation. Because players like Luca Hauf, Maciek Rutkowski or Alexander Blank should no longer be available. Of the ten teams in the league, only the top six qualify for the play-offs. The teams in places seven to ten play with the first two of division two to stay up. Because the league is to play with eight teams again in the 2022/23 season, four of these six teams will be relegated. “Our goal for the season is only to stay in the league and for that we have to play a very good season,” says Beckers.
