The keto diet is familiar to people who have weight problems. The keto diet or ketogenic diet is a diet that prioritizes fat intake and reduces carbohydrate intake to trigger ketosis, the body’s process of converting fat into energy.

Not only can you lose weight, recent research from the University of California in America found that the keto diet can improve memory.

Reporting from Mirror UK (08/04), in general the keto diet focuses on reducing carbohydrates and consuming high amounts of fat. Through this latest research, the keto diet appears to have the potential to help prevent mild cognitive impairment, as well as prevent premature memory loss in people.

This is because foods on the keto diet that contain fat can actually help reduce the risk of several diseases that affect memory, such as Alzheimer’s, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation.

This research further found that diet can change the way brain cells connect and communicate, and can prevent the early onset of disease.

“The data from this study supports the idea that the ketogenic diet in general and BHB (beta-hydroxybutyrate) in particular can help delay mild cognitive impairment, as well as reduce the risk of severe Alzheimer’s disease,” said Gino Cortopassi, one of the researchers of this study.

In this study, the researchers observed mice that were fed according to a keto diet for seven months. As a result, they found that the lifespan of mice on the keto diet increased by 13%, compared to mice on a different diet.

Apart from that, the researchers also examined the brains of mice that were fed a keto diet, they found that the memory storage mechanisms in these mice were much better.

So the researchers concluded that if the keto diet pattern was tested on humans for further research on its effects on brain memory, it is possible that the symptoms of Alzheimer’s at a young age could be reduced by applying the keto diet pattern to your daily diet.
