Due to the crowds, the Keti Koti Festival will not be celebrated this year in Amsterdam’s Oosterpark, but on Museumplein. The organization of the annual celebration of the abolition of slavery expects a higher turnout in Amsterdam and the park is too small for that.
In consultation with the municipality, it has been decided to move the festival. The commemoration will still take place at the national slavery monument in the Oosterpark.
160/150 years
On July 1, it will be 150 years ago that slavery was practically abolished in Suriname and the Caribbean part of the kingdom. Ten years earlier, in 1863, it was formally ended.
After the commemoration at the slavery monument in the Oosterpark, there is always the Keti Koti Festival to celebrate the abolition of slavery. More visitors are expected this year, partly because King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will be there. In addition, this year marks exactly 150 years since the former enslaved were truly free.
