Ketchup industry: A booming sector in Ambatondrazaka, Antananarivo and Toamasina

Products from industrial nurseries are already visible on the local market.

Products from industrial nurseries are already visible on the market. Among the small industries launched as part of the ODOF (One District One Factory) project, is that in Ambatondrazaka, which already has large stocks of finished products.

With an impressive production capacity of 3,000 bottles of ketchup per day, this facility located in Ambalabako represents a significant advancement in the field of tomato processing. The Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Consumer Affairs (MICC) played a crucial role in handing over an industrial machine to this nursery. Hasina Rasolofoharitseheno, economic operator selected to operate this production unit under the Lycoper brand, highlighted the realization of their efforts, now moving on to the crucial phase of marketing and market research. The effective start of ketchup production in Ambalabako was announced on October 15, 2023, marking the start of a rigorous control stage aimed at ensuring compliance with the quality and consumability standards of Lycoper ketchup.

Spin off. For the MICC, this initiative is part of a broader vision of the ODOF project, aiming not only to ensure an adequate supply of basic necessities to the market (PPN), but also to transform the lives of peasant farmers. The responsible minister, Edgard Razafindravahy, underlined the positive impact of these industrial nurseries on the living conditions of farmers, putting an end to storage problems and losses due to the difficulty of marketing. Before this venture, farmers faced major challenges, including storage problems and speculative practices of collectors who purchased agricultural produce at unfavorable prices. However, with the advent of industrial nurseries, these problems were resolved, bringing more fairness to the market.

Big capacity. Although current tomato production in Ambatondrazaka is currently down this season, it is around 8 tonnes per day, compared to 20 tonnes during peak harvest periods. The tomato processing unit in Ambalabako has an impressive processing capacity of one tonne per hour. In short, the establishment of this industrial nursery in Ambatondrazaka marks a decisive turning point in the tomato processing sector in Madagascar. It promises not only an increase in ketchup production but also a positive impact on the lives of farmers, thus illustrating the successes and ambitions of the ODOF project for the economic development of the country.
