“Keruaka Road”

Keruaks

Jack Keruak’s novel “On the Road” is a story of personal freedom, spite, unyieldingness and the search for truth, permeated by the vitality of the 1950s. Director Laura Groza says that people are divided into two groups – those who know Keruaku and those who know nothing about it. Or maybe – it is not known yet, because in honor of the centenary of Keruak, Laura Groza offers a novel in the form of a concert performance on the stage of the Daile Theater Garden. “On the Way” cannot be told or shown without music, so under the direction of Rūdolfs Dankfelds, the actors will be joined by Aija Vītoliņš and musicians who will lead the jazz classics Ella Fitzgerald and Chett Baker, The Doors, Petija Smith and Jimmy Hendrik. It could be a rock-roll summer evening party, but it’s something more, because Keruak’s story is also full of pain and sharpness.

Igenberga

“Rīgas bulvāri”, “Riču-raču dziesmiņa” and other well-known melodies have been created by the initiator, composer and pianist of Latvian pop music Elga Igenberga. Last year we remembered her on her 100th anniversary, but due to restrictions, a musical celebration could not take place, so the legacy left by the composer will be heard on May 27 in Jelgava’s native Jelgava. The naively positive melodies of the last century will be brought to life this week in new and modern sounds, but Elga’s own life story is best known in Daiga Mazvērsīte’s book “Elga Igenberga. The Rice of Life”.

This year we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the legendary Latvian landscape master, classic Vilhelms Purvītis, and from Saturday a retrospective “Purvītis” dedicated to the painter will be on display at the Latvian National Museum of Art. The transparency of the spring sun, the reflection of the flood time, the gloom of autumn, the peace of winter – all this and much more can be found in Purvītis’ paintings, which are not only masterpieces in themselves, but also the immortalization of our Latvian natural course.

“The Loneliness of the Cotton Countryside”

Malkovich

The image of John Malkovich, wrapped in myths and legends, was seen in Riga in the early spring, but will now be quite real on the stage of the Daile Theater together with Ingeborg Dapkunaite in the play “The Loneliness of the Cotton Countryside”. The visit of several world-class artists to Latvia (including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra most recently heard in Liepaja) shows that the “winter sleep” of cultural life caused by the pandemic is rapidly disappearing, we have once again found ourselves at the top of world-class creative expressions. This time a story about the fear, secrecy, lust and feelings that arise between two strangers.
