Berlin (dpa) – The United States’ representative for climate protection, John Kerry, has called for a greater global effort in the fight against climate change during his visit to Germany. Global warming, which at worst could reach four degrees Celsius by the end of the century, is a “gigantic challenge,” Kerry told a news conference in Berlin on Tuesday afternoon.
The US climate representative had traveled to Germany on Monday to discuss international climate protection policy with several German politicians. In addition to Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD, photo), Kerry met on Tuesday with German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU), German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD), and several politicians from the opposition.
Kerry stressed that the task of global climate protection can only be solved if all countries come together, including the major emitters of greenhouse gases, and that 45% of countries have not yet done so. If the goals that countries set in 2015 with the Paris climate protection agreement are not consistently pursued, the world is heading for a catastrophe, the 77-year-old diplomat appealed. The COP26 world climate conference, to be held in Glasgow in November, is the “last and best hope” to get back on track, he concluded.
