Kerr Wightman’s Unexpected Triumph at Budapest World Championships

Budapest (from our reporter) – It was already an engaging story at last year’s World Cup. How Wightman triumphed in front of his dad Geoff, who was at Hayward Field in Eugene as a commentator and was at a loss for words after his son’s triumph.

But this year, Wightman suffered an injury that did not allow him to go to Budapest as a competitor, so he arrived at least as a TV expert. And he could watch with his own eyes the unexpected triumph of his partner, with whom he had raced in Edinburgh since he was a child, before Kerr moved to the USA to study…

After another great season, Ingebrigtsen had no reason to fear anyone. He won all the races in the 15-year-old, improved the European record, moved to fourth place in history with a time of 3:27.14, and came close to the world record.

As the final headed into the deciding phase, Ingebrigtsen moved into first position. But in places similar to where Wightman started last year, Kerr began to move to Nor’s level from the outside. Even though he had a longer track in the corner, he found more strength in the finish.

Kerr is no newcomer to the elite, at the age of 25 he has Olympic bronze at home from Tokyo. But he hid his life race in Budapest. “It’s a reward for those years of hard work. In the last corner, I knew I just had to give it everything I had. Regardless of the pain,” the Brit recounted.

At the finish line, he hugged his emotional parents and received, in addition to a gold medal from the head of World Athletics and middle-distance legend Sebastian Coe, a royal crown from the British fans.

The resigned Ingebrigtsen defended at least the silver by only three hundredths from the unexpectedly nagging compatriot Narve Gilje Nordaas. “All respect to Kerr, but of course I’m disappointed,” said the most successful Norwegian family team coached by their father Gjert.

According to his words, he did not feel 100% in Budapest, he already felt a dry throat after the semi-finals. “It was a little better the morning before the final, but it’s still bad luck,” he lamented.

“At the same time, I gave it everything. I was at the training camp for almost four months with a minimum of social life or contact with the rest of the world,” lamented 22-year-old Ingebrigtsen, who already has an Olympic gold in the 15-meter, but still misses the world championship.

But the good news for Norwegian fans is that Ingebrigtsen is determined to attack the defense of gold in the five-kilometer course in Budapest and that they still had reason to celebrate at the National Athletics Center on Wednesday night. Karsten Warholm, the world record holder in the quarter of obstacles, took care of him.
