Former tennis world number one Angelique Kerber will be hitting the Hamburg European Open in 2024 on her comeback tour after her maternity break. For the 35-year-old from Kiel, it is the first time in the Hanseatic city.
In North German style, Kerber from Kiel addressed her fans via video: “Moin, Moin! This is ‘Angie’, I’m happy that I’ll be playing at the Hamburg European Open next year. For me as a North German, it will definitely be a home game And I’m looking forward to competing in Hamburg for the first time in my career.”
“For me it feels a bit like coming home.”

“As a child, I often attended the Rothenbaum tournament as a fan. Now I’m looking forward to competing in Hamburg for the first time in my career,” said Kerber. “The city has a great tennis tradition with many fans.”
Women’s tournament moves to the city park
The tournament will not be held on the traditional Rothenbaum facility from July 15th to 26th, but in the city park.

For the silver medalist at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016, the clay court tournament in the WTA 250 category should be the optimal preparation for Paris 2024. The games in the French capital start on July 26th, and Kerber would like to be there.
But there is still a long way to go until then. She highlighted this a few days ago. The 35-year-old believes that she will need patience on the “long road” back, which is not necessarily one of her strengths. “A lot will certainly be different when I return, not least because of my role as a mother, but I want to try everything and accept the challenge,” she said.
At the end of the year in the German team at the United Cup
Ten months after the birth of daughter Liana, the former world number one will be on the pitch again for the first time at an official tournament at the United Cup (December 29th to January 7th) in Perth and Sydney as part of the German team. The Kiel native sees the Australian Open in Melbourne (January 14th to 28th) as the first highlight. In the summer, in addition to the home game in Bad Homburg, she is also looking forward to Wimbledon, where she won in 2018 – and now also her debut in Hamburg.
