Thiruvananthapuram – Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal has issued an order banning the name ‘Intifada’ for the Kerala University Art Festival. Katti VC had received a complaint that it should not be used in the arts festival as it is a name used by Palestine against Israel. The complaint stated that this name has nothing to do with art or culture. A.S., a native of Kollam Anchal, is against the name ‘Intifada’ for the art festival. Ashish, a first year graduate student, had filed a petition in the High Court. The VC said that the explanation given by the union was not satisfactory.

The word is used to promote violence against a group. This word does not promote unity. The petition pointed out that the name ‘Intifada’ is disturbing and Intifada is an Arabic word for ‘upheaval’. Palestinians use this term to refer to people taking to the streets. Therefore, it was pointed out in the complaint that this word has nothing to do with art.

After receiving the complaint, the VC sought an explanation from the registrar. The registrar sought an explanation from the director of the students’ service department and the chairman of the Ekarala University Union. Following this, the VC directed to remove the word ‘Intifada’ from all the platforms of Kalolsavam.

Kalolsavam starts from March 7. The registrar received a reply from the director of student services and the chairman of the university union that the name was decided by the university union. The registrar university union chairman gave an explanation that the name ‘Intifada’ was given to defend the atrocities committed by Israel against the children of Palestine. The Director of Student Services also supported the name. The director explained that the union has the freedom to choose the name and there is no need to interfere.

In a letter to the Registrar, the VC stated that these justifications cannot be accepted. Art festival is organized not to protest. To increase unity among students. Students Union has chosen a wrong name which affects students and general public. There are limits to freedom of expression. Freedom of expression should not be used in a way that hurts others and disturbs the harmony and peace of the campus. Arts festival cannot be changed as a platform to present certain ideas. The VC informed the registrar that these should be platforms for promoting art and culture.
