Kenyans aim for the Grand Slam at the New York Marathon

Since the beginning of the year they have taken control of the first five big marathons of the circuit: the double Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge won in Tokyo (6 March) and Berlin (25 September), Evans Chebet in Boston (18 April), Amos Kipruto a London (October 2) and Benson Kipruto in Chicago (October 9).

It would be the first time a nation has won the Grand Slam since the World Circuit was expanded to six races, with the addition of the Tokyo Marathon in 2013.

“I come here to defend my title,” said Korir, 28, after training where he ran up to 200km a week. “I am confident and I think I am well prepared. I will have to fight because everyone comes to win. “

Unusual temperatures

One of the obstacles to his victory could be the weather, as on Sunday unusually high temperatures are expected for the season, with 23 ° C.

“I don’t like the heat. But we can’t do anything against the clock. We will need to hydrate more, “said Albert Korir.

Korir and Chebet, however, will have to face strong competition from runners of other origins, such as the Ethiopian Shura Kitata, second in New York last year, or the Dutch Abdi Nageeye, Olympic vice-champion in Tokyo.

As for the women’s competition, the retirement of the Kenyan Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir leaves room for another Kenyan, Hellen Obiri, 32. The Ethiopian world champion Gotytom Gebreslase also wants to win the title in the race.

Obiri will compete in her first marathon after a brilliant track career, crowned in particular by two consecutive world champion titles in the 5,000 meters, in 2017 and 2019.

“I know the New York marathon is a tough race, but I hope my track, road and cross-country experience will help me with the ups and downs,” said Obiri.

“It’s my first marathon, I’m training well so I can’t wait to give my best in this race”, added the Kenyan.
