Kenyan Bishops Urge Government to Open Dialogue with Opposition Amid Violent Protests

In the African country of Kenya, a series of violent protests broke out in recent days. The Bishops Conference of the country called on the government to open a dialogue with the opposition to ease the socio-economic burden of the people and save the country from chaos.

(Vatican News Network) In Kenya, Africa, due to people’s dissatisfaction with a series of tax systems introduced by President Ruto’s government, violent protests have recently occurred in the capital Nairobi and the country’s major cities Mombasa and Kisumu. On July 19, opposition leader Raila Odinga launched a three-day protest. Schools and businesses are suspended, public transport is at a standstill and police are on alert. The Kenyan bishops responded immediately to the current situation.

According to Fides, the bishops strongly demanded the resumption of the bipartisan talks, with religious leaders and other institutions invited to participate. The bishops appeal to President Ruto and Azimio la Umoja (Azimio la Umoja) leader Odinga: “We believe that there is no problem that cannot be resolved through dialogue. We must avoid human casualties at all costs. No more bloodshed.”

The first priority should be to alleviate the socio-economic conditions of the people

“The government must actively listen to the plight of Kenyans, provide clear and honest explanations for broken commitments, and prioritize policies to reduce the socio-economic burden,” the bishops underscored. “The policy and direction of the government remain unclear in many areas; for example, education, health, the situation of the poor, strategies to improve employment,” the bishops stressed. The bishops reminded that “criminals have mingled with the demonstrators, destroying property, looting, injuring and killing people. The police should bring them to justice in order to ensure that peaceful demonstrations proceed according to the law”.
